GRA - Entrepreneurial Teacher Leaders
Academy for Entrepreneurial Leadership Research Assistantship - 50 percent
The Entrepreneurial Leadership in STEM Teaching & learning (EnLiST) initiative at Illinois intends to develop and build the infrastructural elements necessary to sustain a state-wide community of highly qualified science Teacher Leaders who will effectively contribute to the transformation of science teaching and learning throughout the K-12 educational continuum in their districts. EnLiST will achieve its goals through a combination of intensive summer institutes and year-round professional development and collaborative activities. The innovation of EnLiST is its intent to reconceptualize the very notion of a "Teacher Leader" by drawing on scholarship in the field of social and entrepreneurial leadership and theories of distributed leadership. EnLiST aims to create a new generation of Teacher Leaders who, armed with cutting edge content knowledge, a strong pedagogical repertoire, and entrepreneurial spirit, can support their colleagues and transform their schools into responsive and data driven institutions of teaching and learning. The major research questions of the project will center on understanding and assessing the development of the target Teacher Leaders and the success of those leaders in transforming their own teaching. The ultimate aim is to develop a scalable national model for the preparation of social and entrepreneurial science Teacher Leaders who act as strong champions and effective initiators and implementors of change in pre-college science teaching and learning. The EnLiST research questions are: (a) What is the impact, if any, of the project's activities on participant Teacher Leaders' conceptions, attitudes, skills, and behaviors related to social and entrepreneurial leadership? (b) What is the nature of the perceived organizational culture in partner school districts in relation to barriers to, and encouragement of, innovation and change? What are the associated roles of Teacher Leaders and school administrators? (c) What is the differential impact, if any, of enhanced social and entrepreneurial leadership among Teacher Leaders on effecting innovation and change in science teaching and learning in partner school districts?

Integration Application Developer
AITS Research Assistantship - 50 percent
The Research Assistant/Integration Application Developer position is funded primarily by the prestigious Mellon Award for Technology Collaboration received by the University of Illinois for its contributions to the OpenEAI Project (http://www.OpenEAI.org). OpenEAI is an integration methodology and technology for Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) and for implementing Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) for application integration developed as a part of the University of Illinois' UI-Integrate project to update and integrate the University's mission-critical enterprise systems. The technology can be applied to any market sector, and its open source universal integration methodology can be applied to all integrations and services regardless of their technical implementation.
Research Assistants will be assigned to integration projects with the Integration Competency Center (ICC) team of the University's Administrative IT Services department. They will learn the OpenEAI methodology for analysis of integration requirements and the OpenEAI technical approach to implementing integrations in service oriented architectures. The research assistants will work closely with the ICC team, the application development team, the enterprise architects of the University of Illinois, and the members of the OpenEAI Software Foundation. Research assistants will attend OpenEAI training consisting of at least three courses: a technology overview, analysis and development, and deployment and administration.
The OpenEAI Software Foundation is modeled after the Apache Software Foundation and was incorporated in October 2002 to provide organizational, legal, and financial support for the OpenEAI project and closely-related endeavors that may be integrated into the project. The foundation was created with the assistance of the University of Illinois (which gifted seminal EAI work to the OpenEAI Software Foundation) and Open Integration Incorporated. The foundation was incorporated as a membership-based, not-for-profit corporation in order to ensure that the OpenEAI Project continues to exist beyond the participation of individual volunteers, enable contributions of intellectual property and funds on a sound basis, and provide a framework to limit legal exposure for contributors participating in an expansive open-source project. Research Assistants will have the opportunity to become members of the OpenEAI Software Foundation during the period of their assistantship. Membership requires significant contributions to the project. As members they could help shape the OpenEAI Project and steer the OpenEAI Software Foundation in the future.
